Every business, big and small, needs to continually improve to be sustainable and competitive. There should be a focus on both internal processes and products / services.
The first step to improve the results from your R&D activities is to understand and promote the real value of perseverance and risk taking. Risk is inherent in all R&D activities. Without a degree of risk there is unlikely to be any innovation.
To promote a culture of healthy risk taking there needs to be some tolerance of failure. People involved in R&D activities need to do the following:
- Identify when something goes wrong.
- Try to fix the problem.
- Persevere until there is a solution to the problem.
- Don’t worry about problems before they happen.
The focus of the R&D activities should be on learning from the failures as much as the successes.
Also, do not forget to protect your new ideas with patents.
